Missing Person located, Deceased – Closure for Family due to efforts of Search Volunteers

On April 8, 2018, a 64-year-old male transient was reported missing from the Mayer area by his family having last been seen on April 4, 2018. The missing man’s vehicle had been located earlier by family member in the Goodwin Burn area near Big Bug Wash off Grape Vine Road outside of Mayer. The vehicle remained parked at the location apparently untouched over the next several days and there was no sight of the missing family member. As a result, the family called YCSO to investigate and noted the missing family member had made suicidal comments in the past. Deputies searched the area but could not find the missing man or any evidence of his whereabouts.

The following morning, April 9, 2018, deputies and volunteers from the Yavapai County Search and Rescue Team’s Search Dog Unit (YCSRT-SDU) were deployed and spent the entire day searching for the missing person. At approximately 6:30 PM, the man’s body was found in a remote section of the Grape Vine wash as a result of the Search Dog Team’s efforts with their K9s. YCSRT Backcountry volunteers were called in to recover the body due to the difficult terrain.

The body was released to the Yavapai County Medical Examiner pending an autopsy. There was no indication of foul play. The family has been notified and YCSO personnel expressed condolences on the loss of their loved one.

The supervising deputy said, “Our volunteers did an outstanding job with their persistence regarding the location effort. The individual units within YCSRT were able to work together and accomplish the necessary actions to find and recover the missing man.”
